Hallmarking & Assay Assured

Our jewellery is tested and hallmarked in the UK for your peace of mind.

HALLMARKING

Jewellery is made in precious metal alloys instead of being used in its pure form.

Even the most experienced jeweller cannot tell how much precious metal there is in an alloy, just by looking at it, nor whether a thick plating of gold is covering a base metal interior. This offers a huge opportunity for fraud and there has therefore always been a need to protect the public from those who are tempted to cheat them.

All items being sold as gold, silver, platinum or palladium in the UK and countries signatories of the International Hallmarking Convention must be hallmarked to confirm that they meet the legal standard. This can only be done by one of the four UK Assay Offices, or an Assay Office belonging to the International Convention.

The only items which are exempt are those which are under the legal weight threshold:

·      1 gram for Gold

·      0.5 grams for Platinum

·      1 gram for Palladium

·      7.78 grams for Silver

We want you to buy with confidence from us, so all jewellery we import and sell are tested and hallmarked in the UK in accordance with the Hallmarking Act of 1973.

ASSAY ASSURED

All precious metal jewellery offered by Assay Assured Jewellery Retailers carries the legally-required independent hallmark verifying the precious metal content (unless the item is exempt by weight).

We are part of a scheme of testing by Assay Assured to ensure that jewellery exempt by weight from hallmarking is also of the claimed standard – a protection over and above legal requirements.

All products sold by us are accurately described stating the precious metal content.

AMAGOLD

We only sell jewellery made by AMAGOLD certified jewellers.

AMAGOLD (Americas Gold Manufacturers Association) was founded in 2001 in Brazil by the World Gold Council in order to implement a quality assurance mark to the gold content in the country.

Apart from the Hallmarking Act of 1973 (adopted in the UK), this concept grew in Europe in 1991 with the EMAGOLD mark (European Gold Manufacturers Association), adopted by jewellers of France, Spain and Italy to join the European Union.
